Deciding to sing at your own wedding is a brave choice even if you already sing!
It’s a moment when you stand up in front of friends and family in a way that you may never have done before. It’s also at a turning point in our lives as we commit to a partnership that will inform all of our decisions in the future. At that moment we need to be able to voice our truth and be seen by our friends and family.
When I was planning our wedding ceremony I asked my father to choose the song that I would walk up the aisle to. I expected him to pick something from André Rieu The violinist conductor from Maastricht. My Dad had been to see him in concert and he always loved that kind of classical music. To my surprise my Dad didn’t pick Andre – he picked me!
A few years before I reconnected with my fiance Mike, my Dad offered to help me record a couple of songs in his friend’s recording studio. One of the songs was Can’t Help Falling in Love with You by Elvis Presley. The recording turned out well but I hadn’t done anything to promote it so no one else really knew about it!
When I listened to it again I realised just how perfect the song was! I was really surprised and flattered that my dad suggested I use it to walk up the aisle with him for my wedding ceremony.
One wonderful thing about using this recording for my wedding was that I didn’t feel under any pressure to do any other singing that day. I felt that my identity as a singer was acknowledged which meant I could focus on my role as the bride for the rest of the day.
My friend’s admitted that they cried as I walked up the aisle hearing the sound of my voice telling Mike how I couldn’t help to fall in love with him. And actually got played twice because they mistakenly thought that I was ready before it was!
If you are planning to sing for your wedding then also consider using a recording as part of your day or as a backup plan in case you decide you don’t want to sing live. You could feel too emotional on the day or too distracted by all the other wonderful things that are happening. In that case having a recording of yourself singing takes the pressure off!
